Patriots Draft Profile: UConn’s Obi Melinfonwu

Philip Tor | Slump Sports

The bulk of free agency has come and gone and surprise surprise, the Patriots won. Now it’s time to turn the focus towards the NFL draft that is happening in a little over a month. The Patriots traded their first round pick (32nd Overall) for Brandin Cooks a few weeks back, but there has been gossip about a possible trade that would send Malcolm Butler to the Saints and the Patriots first rounder back to New England. Even if the Patriots do not get their pick back, plenty of prospects are available that could be selected by New England.

One of the popular prospects that has been connected to the Patriots is UCONN star safety “Obi” Melinfonwu. Obi turned heads at the combine in February when he put up some crazy numbers in a number of workouts. He led all safeties with a 4.40 40-yard dash, a 44.0 Inch vertical jump, and a 11″9 inch broad jump.

So as you can tell from the video above, the man is an athletic FREAK. If you thought that was impressive watch this video. Obi literally floats in this video, and was only 6 inches away from breaking the world record in the broad jump set by former UConn teammate Byron Jones at 2015 combine.

Obi has been projected anywhere from mid 1st to the late second round. After his performance at the combine his draft stock has only gone up. Teams like the Raiders, Lions, and Saints are all interested in the 6″4 safety. This was until recently, when the New England Patriots sent two scouts to his pro day at UConn.
The Patriots are not in dire need of a safety at this moment, but Melifonwu has been working out as a Cornerback at his workouts for NFL teams. His large frame and speed could make a versatile defensive back in any NFL system. The Patriots have tried to add big bodies at the position to improve this area of their defense, especially after the acquisition of Stephon Gilmore (6″1) this offseason.

The next obstacle for New England is picks. Currently the Patriots first pick in the draft is in the third round, not very Belichick-like. Any real Patriots fan knows that Belichick will probably make a move up into the second round at least, and if he does, one of the first prospects on their board will be Melifonwu. Obi is a player who has tremendous athleticism, instincts, and upside and could help the Patriots in the future when guys like Devin McCourty and Patrick Chung (both turning 30 this year) eventually leave Foxboro.

Obi is just one of many exciting player in this years draft, so start to get excited because the Patriots are not even close to done making moves.
